Changes in requirements for winter tyres

The Estonian Transport Administration wants to remind everyone that starting from 1 December, cars may only use winter tyres without studs that have the three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol.

The change results from the regulation of the Minister of Economy and Communications that entered into force on 25 October 2019, which states that cars, vans, O2-category trailers and L6e and L7e category vehicles with a body are only allowed to use studless winter tyres with the three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol.

The symbol is added if the winter tyre is classified as a winter tyre that can be used in heavy snow conditions. Tyres with the corresponding symbol are more suitable for snow conditions than the previously known tyres with the M + S symbol.

As an exception, vehicles using all-terrain tyres complying with UNECE Regulation No. 54 and marked with the corresponding professional all-terrain tyre symbol "POR" do not have to use tyres with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol.

The symbol according to UNECE Regulation No. 117:
