The speed limit on all 2+1 and some 2+2 roads will be 100 km/h. All other roads will have speed limits up to 90 km/h.
“And we’d like to remind everyone that the upper speed limit isn’t the speed you have to drive at,'' said Siim Vaikmaa, head of the Road Traffic Management Unit of the Estonian Transport Administration. “Your speed should be based on the road and driving conditions. 'With winter road conditions, overtaking might take significantly more time and should be avoided on 2+1 roads due to the limited overtaking lanes. Even on 2+2 roads, overtaking might be risky due to slippery conditions.''
Of the 2+2 roads, a speed limit of 100 km/h will remain in effect on the Tallinn ring road and some sections of the Tallinn-Tartu and Tallinn-Narva highways (see attachment). Higher speed limits will be established on roads with fitting traffic conditions. A speed limit of 90 km/h will remain in effect on roads where there is a greater risk of accidents involving animals or pedestrians in the winter.
In the case of suitable driving conditions, the Estonian Transport Administration retains the right to increase the speed limits on variable-message signs to 110 km/h during daylight hours in winter on the Laagri-Ääsmäe section of the Tallinn-Pärnu highway and the Kose-Võõbu section of the Tallinn-Tartu highway.
For the winter, a speed limit of 110 km/h will remain in effect on 36 km of road and 100 km/h on 115 km of road.
The speed limits need to be lowered because cold weather can make the roads slippery. Drivers must choose the appropriate speed for the road conditions in order to safely reach their destination. The slippery winter conditions require more attentiveness and consideration for others from drivers.

It is important to drive a vehicle that is in good technical condition and fit for the season. Make sure that the brakes, lights and windscreen wipers are in working order.
The use of studded tires is allowed from October 15, winter tires must be fitted to all cars by December 1.
